Board Members

The "Weed Board" is made up of a five member volunteer citizen Board of Directors appointed by the County Commissioners to serve renewable four year terms and one Ex-Officio member who is the County Extension Agent or designee.  This Board directly supervises the Coordinator, sets Weed Board policy and procedures, approves all bills and acts as the Hearing Board with quasi-judicial powers to hear landowner testimony in contested enforcement cases.

The five volunteer Board Members each live within one of the five weed districts  set up by the County Commissioners.  Our districts divide the county from east to west into five sections starting with District 1 in the north through District 5 in the south.  These Board Members strive to represent the interests of their fellow landowners and land users throughout the county.

Seasonal Employment Opportunity

We Need You!  We are looking for someone to join our team as Field Inspector.  Inspectors travel throughout specific areas of the County looking for noxious weed issues, contacting landowners about controlling weeds and following up to see that weeds are controlled as required.  Time is split about 50/50 in the field and in the office entering data into our specialized weed data base, looking up property owners and corresponding with them.

Inspectors must have reliable personal transportation and current WA State required insurance and license.  Must be computer savvy-we use Microsoft Word, Excel Spreadsheets and Access Database programs.  Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.  Some knowledge of Weed Identification is greatly preferred, but we are all still learning and it is a skill that can be picked up as the season progresses.  Inspectors must have or successfully acquire WA State Public Operator Pesticide License within a few weeks of hire.  The license is required in order to consult with landowners about various herbicides to use for weed control as well as for treating noxious weeds through our Cost Share program.  Not all inspectors will be required to use herbicides but all must be knowledgeable about them and be willing to recommend them as a tool for weed control.

The season generally starts mid-April, part-time, then progresses to full time (max 40 hours/week) May-August.  There may be more part-time work in September as work load and budget allow.  Inspectors are considered "Extra Help Employees" and may not work more than 4 full-time months in a 12 month period.  Pay is an hourly rate that is dependent upon experience but will start slightly higher than minimum wage.  You will be reimbursed for allowable mileage (currently $.54/mile) for use of your personal vehicle.

There is a lot to learn and training is on-going but it is rewarding work for the right individual-someone who is a self-starter, enjoys and is able to work independently, and who cares about the quality of our land resources.  Some of our inspectors have worked for more than 12 years, season after season.

If you are interested and would like to learn more about the position and whether or not it is right for you, please contact us by email weedboard@co.stevens.wa.us  or call 509-684-7590, right away.

 Location and Office Hours

Our office is located approximately 1 mile north of Colville between mile post #231 and #232 at the intersection of State Hwy 395 and Williams Lake Road.  We are in the USDA building (otherwise known as the Ag Service Center) between Hewes Craft Marine & the U-Haul business. (Map)

Our office hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday.  There are times when all of the staff is in the field, away at training or otherwise occupied, especially prior to the hiring of seasonal help.  The office will not be staffed during these times, but the building houses several agencies and is generally open from 8:00 am to 5 pm Monday-Friday.  This allows our customers to leave plant samples or messages for us, look through our reference books on the counter and to help themselves to various handouts we have available even though we are not in.
